According to the couple's international press secretary, Prince Harry and wife Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, can no longer refer to Frogmore Cottage as their second residence in Britain.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been asked to leave their home at Frogmore Cottage, Ashley Hansen confirmed in a statement on Wednesday.
In 2020, after they retired as active members of the British royal family, the couple moved from the house on the grounds of Windsor Castle to Southern California.
They said then that Frogmore Cottage would remain their base when they visited the U.K.
The BBC said that the estate, which has 10 bedrooms and was gifted to the couple by the late queen, was renovated for them with the intention that it would serve as their primary abode.
They claimed to have paid back more than $3 million in taxpayer funds used to renovate the house in 2020. When the couple decided to resign from their roles as royals, one of the criticisms was the Frogmore renovations.
They were criticized for allegedly seeking to avoid their royal duties while enjoying some of the perks, such as relocating to the historic home after it had been repaired with funds provided by British tax payers.
The Sovereign Grant, a large state-run real estate empire, was paid back the money that had been borrowed from it. The royal family receives funding from the government, almost $100 million annually, to manage their affairs.
Archie and Lilibet were born to Meghan and Harry after their May 2018 wedding.
In 2020, they agreed to an agreement with Netflix to make movies, television series, and documentaries for an unknown sum. Millions of people watched "Harry & Meghan" when it first aired in December 2022.
Harry has continued to be outspoken about his life in the royal family and the intense media scrutiny he and Meghan were under.
“They drove me from my country,” Harry told Anderson Cooper on CBS’ “60 Minutes” in January, promoting a bombshell memoir filled with revelations.
He has long alleged an unhealthy relationship between the royal family and the British media, in addition to having blamed photographers for the death of his mother, Princess Diana.
