The Republican Caucus in Iowa on Monday officially began the 2024 US presidential race.
Following his resounding victory in the caucus votes, former US President Donald Trump will enter next week's New Hampshire primary with a strong advantage over his competitors. In addition, Vivek Ramaswamy, Trump's opponent, endorsed him after his dismal loss in the race.
Republicans and Democrats select their presidential candidates through primaries and caucuses. While most states in the US hold primaries, some states that are traditionally Republican, like Iowa, hold caucuses to choose delegates. In order to nominate the party candidate, delegates chosen in the primaries and caucuses cast ballots at the corresponding party conventions. July will see the Republican National Convention.
What you should know about the outcomes and highlights is provided below.
With fifty-one percent of the vote, Trump solidified his position as the Republican Party's front-runner. Important voting blocs in the caucus, namely White evangelicals and extremely conservative voters, probably gave Trump a lot of support.
Trump's margin surpassed Bob Dole's record of 12.8 percentage points in the 1988 Iowa Caucus, making it the greatest ever.
His victory comes in spite of growing legal challenges based on allegations including plotting to rig the US election in 2020.
According to pro-Trump sources, Trump received at least 20 of the 40 delegates, while his closest opponent, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, received eight, followed by Nikki Haley with seven.
More than 21% of the vote went to DeSantis, and Haley came in second place with almost 21% of the vote. Despite receiving only about 8% of the vote, Ramaswamy managed to secure three delegates.
