An explosive device was discovered in a bag that was supposed to be loaded onto a plane at an airport on Monday, according to investigators. A Pennsylvania man was detained and now faces federal charges.
Following the incident at Lehigh Valley International Airport on Monday night, the FBI said that they had detained 40-year-old Marc Muffley at his residence in Lansford.
On Monday morning, he is reported to have checked a rolling luggage at the Allegiant Air counter.
The FBI described the device in court records as a circular compound concealed in the suitcase's lining and described by the Transportation Security Administration as a live explosive device. Two fuses were linked to the compound, and it contained a powder that was "suspected to be a blend of flash powder and the dark granulars that are used in commercial grade pyrotechnics," according to an affidavit from the FBI that was included with a criminal complaint.
The FBI affidavit and the criminal complaint don't explain why the suitcase contained bombs.
Muffley is seen on surveillance cameras at 10:45 a.m. being dropped off at the airport, according to the FBI's complaint.
According to FBI Special Agent Eddie Garcia's affidavit, the airport paged Muffley at 11:40 a.m. after the material was discovered in the suitcase and told him to proceed to the security checkpoint.
The document claims that Muffley is captured on camera exiting the airport around 11:45 a.m.
