Grammy nominations for 2023 are led by Beyoncé and Kendrick Lamar.

Beyoncé won four prizes at the 2021 Grammys, raising her total to 28, making her the most successful female recipient in Grammy history. She will have nine chances to raise her total during the event in 2023: The diva, 41, is the most nominated artist for the 65th Grammy Awards, and all but one of her nominations are for her dance-oriented album "Renaissance."

According to the Recording Academy's announcement on Tuesday, she is nominated for the most awards, eight, followed by seven each for Adele, Brandi Carlile, Harry Styles, Mary J. Blige, Future, DJ Khaled, and the producer and composer The-Dream.

After two years of delays and difficulties brought on by the Covid-19 outbreak, the awards will be presented on February 5 at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles (the former Staples Center). The academy is hopeful that this would mark a return to something resembling normal business operations.

Beyoncé has received nominations in all three of the major all-genre categories, including album, record, and song of the year for her single "Break My Soul," as well as in the dance/electronic category and in R&B, where her songs "Virgo's Groove," "Plastic Off the Sofa," and "Cuff It" were all honored. For "Be Alive," from the movie "King Richard," she is also nominated for best song created for visual media.

Beyoncé now has 88 nominations in her career, which is tied with her husband Jay-Z for the most of any artist in the awards' history. Jay-Z, who previously held the record with 83 nominations, received five more this year for his contributions to DJ Khaled's "God Did" and "Renaissance."

If Beyoncé wins three Grammys in February, she will tie Georg Solti for the most Grammys ever given to one artist. She and Quincy Jones are already tied for second place in the race.

Beyoncé has been nominated for numerous awards dating back to her time with Destiny's Child in the 1990s, but she has only ever won one in any of the four most important categories: song of the year in 2010 for "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)," for which she is acknowledged as the songwriter. Every other victory came in genre categories with little voter turnout.

Beyoncé will once again compete against Adele in several categories, including album of the year ("Renaissance" vs. Adele's "30") and single and song of the year ("Break My Soul" vs. "Easy on Me," which is certain to be one of the night's key storylines).

The two female pop icons last competed at the 2017 Grammys. Both have devoted fan bases. In a carefully watched competition for album of the year that year, Adele's "25" defeated Beyoncé's "Lemonade," adding fuel to long-standing accusations that Black singers are sometimes overlooked in the most important categories. Adele, who was visibly moved as she accepted the trophy, said, "My artist of my life is Beyoncé. I'm really grateful and gracious."

Other contenders for album of the year this year include Lamar for "Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers, his first release in five years; Harry's House by Harry Styles; Special by Lizzo; In These Silent Days by Carlile; Good Morning Gorgeous by Mary J. Blige (in its "deluxe" edition); Music of the Spheres by Coldplay; Voyage by Abba, the Swedish quartet's first new album in forty years; and Un Verano Sin Ti by Bad Bunny.

The year's best-selling album thus far and streaming sensation "Un Verano" is the first exclusively Spanish-language recording to be nominated for album of the year. With ten nominations, Puerto Rican singer Bad Bunny leads the Latin Grammys on Thursday.

"Break My Soul" and "Easy on Me" will compete for the record of the year award, which is given to the musicians, producers, and engineers behind a single song, against "As It Was" by Harry Styles, "About Damn Time" by Lizzo, "Woman" by Doja Cat, "The Heart Part 5" by Kendrick Lamar, "You and Me on the Rock" by Carlile with Lucius, "Don't Shut Me Down"

Along with Gayle's "Abcdefu," Bonnie Raitt's "Just Like That," DJ Khaled's "God Did," and Taylor Swift's "All Too Well (10 Minute Version)," which is an extended version of a song that first appeared on Swift's 2012 album "Red," which she rereleased as a new recording last year, these songs are also up for song of the year, a songwriters' award.

Old songs typically don't qualify for the Grammys. However, the lengthy "All Too Well" met a threshold requirement because it had more than 50% brand-new content, according to the academy. With "I Bet You Think About Me (Taylor's Version) (From the Vault)," Swift is up for best country song in addition to song of the year.

Anitta, Omar Apollo, Domi & JD Beck, Samara Joy, Latto, Maneskin, Muni Long, Tobe Nwigwe, Molly Tuttle, and Wet Leg are among the up-and-comers (and some now-established stars) from a wide range of genres on the ballot for best new artist, the fourth and final of the Grammys' four most coveted awards.

There are noticeable abstentions, as there have been for the past few years. Bruno Mars and Anderson.Paak, who won single and song of the year at the most recent awards show for their soul throwback project Silk Sonic, declined to submit their album "An Evening With Silk Sonic" — "gracefully, humbly and most importantly, sexually," they told Rolling Stone last month.

And The Weeknd has adhered to his commitment of boycotting future nominations, which he announced in 2021 when his popular album "After Hours" received no nominations. Drake received four nods this time as a featured artist or writer, but withdrawing his name from the 2022 awards after the nominations were revealed.

Over the past few years, the constantly changing Grammy process has undergone substantial modifications, many of them in reaction to complaints that the awards were failing musicians of color and that an opaque nominating process allowed for insider manipulation. The top categories' ballot increased from five slots to eight in 2019 and from eight to ten in 2018 because to an unexpected regulation adjustment made at the last minute.

The majority of the Recording Academy's nominating committees, which narrowed down the selections of its voting members to determine which musicians made the cut in dozens of categories, were removed last year.

According to Harvey Mason Jr., the organization's chief executive, the votes only contain the choices made by the 11,000 music professionals who are voting members of the academy, excluding "craft committees" in the classical field and other specialized fields like production and packaging.

It's a vote from our voter members only now that the nominating committees have been disbanded, Mason claimed. The nominations go to the top vote-getters. That's it; the story is over.

A new award, songwriter of the year (nonclassical), which honors writers who write songs for other musicians to perform, is one of the other modifications this year. Professional songwriters, a significant constituency in Grammy circles, had long wished for the addition, which was made official in 2021 with the creation of the Songwriters & Composers Wing.

The-Dream (Beyoncé, Brent Faiyaz), Amy Allen (for songs performed by Lizzo, Styles, and others), Nija Charles (Megan Thee Stallion and Dua Lipa, Beyoncé), Tobias Jesso Jr. (Adele, Styles), and Laura Veltz were all nominated for the new songwriter award in its inaugural year (Maren Morris, Demi Lovato).

The competition for best pop vocal album this year includes "Harry's House," "Voyage," "30," "Music of the Spheres," and "Special," among 91 other categories. Along with the Black Keys, Elvis Costello & the Imposters, Machine Gun Kelly, Idles, and Spoon, Ozzy Osbourne is up for best rock album.

Wet Leg, Arctic Monkeys, Florence + the Machine, Big Thief, and Yeah Yeah Yeahs are among the artists in the new genre of alternative music performance.

In addition to Future's "I Never Liked You," Jack Harlow's "Come Home the Kids Miss You," and Pusha T's "It's Almost Dry," "Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers" and "God Did" are up for best rap album.

Willie Nelson, 89, will compete against Miranda Lambert, Luke Combs, Ashley McBryde, and Maren Morris for best country album. Along with Questlove, Viola Davis, and Jamie Foxx, Mel Brooks and Lin-Manuel Miranda will compete in the best audiobook, narration, and storytelling recording category.

The 65th Grammy Awards honor recordings that were made between October 1, 2021, and September 30, 2022. 16,741 qualified entries were submitted for consideration this year, compared to over 22,000 the year before.

The Recording Academy and its producers were compelled by pandemic-related delays and venue changes to make significant revisions for the last two ceremonies, both of which were hosted by Trevor Noah. The Grammys relocated to Las Vegas for the first time ever for its 64th edition in April of 2021 after having delivered a scaled-down outdoor event without an audience in 2021.

This year, the academy is looking forward to a return to its home turf, though the show will still have some Covid-19 protections in place, Mason said.

“I’m so tired of addressing Covid,” he said. “I’m so happy for it to go far, far away and never come back.”

“But,” he added, “we’ll see where we are in three months.”
