A guy might spend the rest of his life in prison for spitting at police officers while being arrested, proving that everything is bigger in Texas, including prison sentences.
After finding him guilty of two counts of harassing a public employee, 36-year-old Larry Pearson received the shocking sentence from a Lubbock jury on Wednesday.Authorities claim Pearson spat at two Lubbock PD officers who detained him in May 2022 after a lady reported that Pearson had struck her in the face. Pearson was charged with domestic violence.
Prosecutors say the spitting didn't end there … claiming Pearson kept hocking loogies upon arrival at the Lubbock County Detention Center.
During the trial's closing arguments, prosecutor Jessica Gorman asked jurors to consider a sentence that would "send a message" to not only Pearson, but also society … and he ended up getting 70 years.
The guy is definitely not an angel, but there is a large age difference between him and you, 25! And it seems excessive for a crime like spitting. Including Texas.
In the meantime, Pearson's defense lawyer Jim Shaw argued for a lenient punishment, telling the jury that this case included a "simple misdemeanor" that got "out of control."
