R. Kelly has formally appealed his conviction in a federal sex crimes case out of New York, and he has a long list of justifications for his position.
The controversial musician, who was convicted in 2021 on nine federal counts, including accusations for RICO, sex crimes, and human trafficking, claims he was treated unfairly throughout the protracted trial, according to court documents acquired by TMZ.

R. Kelly's defense team initially claims that, despite a jury finding him on all counts, the government did not fulfill its burden of proof in court. His attorneys had particular complaints regarding the jury and some of the evidence that the prosecution was permitted to present at trial.
At least 4 of the jury members, according to his attorneys, confessed prejudging his guilt before rendering their official judgement. He also claims that at least 2 of the jury members had viewed the docuseries "Surviving R. Kelly" and should never have been allowed to serve.
Regarding the young women he is accused of grooming and molesting, Kelly appears to have a reason for each incident. In spite of the prosecution's insistence that the alleged grooming began while the accused victims were still juveniles, he claims that several of them were at least 18 years old when he first met them and began having sex with them.
His side contends that Kelly was mislead at the time about the true age of the females in the instances where he is claimed to have met with actual juveniles.
On the evidence front, his team asserts that a lot of material that shouldn't have been heard or viewed by the jury was admitted during the trial, which negatively impacted his chances of receiving a fair trial.
For example, he claims that specifics about his sexual life and/or behavior and conduct with former partners or exes — accounts of which dove into STDs, sexual preferences, and bedroom behavior — were not pertinent to the crimes being charged against him and were merely an attempt by the prosecution to persuade the jury.
He also objects to former acquaintances and workers of his who were called to testify, claiming that many of them gave false testimony about matters they didn't actually know about and weren't privy to in their capacity as employees. He is requesting that the appeals court overturn his convictions or, at the very least, mandate a fresh trial. Of course, he was also found guilty in a separate federal case that originated in Chicago. Not yet an appeal for that
R. Kelly's appeal was submitted by his lawyer, Jennifer Bonjean, on Tuesday. In addition to the additional 20 years for the Chicago case, he is currently serving a 30-year term in this issue.
