Rep. Tom Reed of New York announced on Tuesday that he will resign from Congress at the end of the day, ending his last term. Following sexual misconduct allegations, Reed announced his resignation from Congress in March 2021.

"It has been a privilege to work with all of you from both sides. This institution is one of my favorites because it still represents the best aspects of our government: we are the People's House. While I am pleased that we have prioritized people before politics, there is still much more to be done "On the House floor, Reed expressed his thoughts. He'll be joining Prime Policy Group, a bipartisan lobbying firm based in Washington, D.C.

"The people of Western New York have my undying gratitude. Thank you for providing the distinction of serving you at the highest level to a country lawyer, the youngest of 12 children reared by a single mother whose father died when he was only two. Such a goal can only be realized in America "he added.

In 2017, Reed was accused of touching a female lobbyist in an inappropriate manner. In March 2021, he apologized for the incident, saying it happened "at a difficult period in my life."

The congressional map in New York is presently being constructed by a "special master" appointed by the state's highest court, so it's unclear what particular district Reed would leave behind.

Esper on the difficulties of working in the Trump administration (full interview) (CBS News)Since 2010, Reed has served as the representative for New York's 23rd congressional district. After Democrats demolished her district in central New York, Republican Claudia Tenney of New York's 22nd district announced she would compete to fill Reed's seat.

Reed served on the House Ways and Means committee and was a member of the nonpartisan Problem Solvers Caucus.

He is the 22nd Republican in the House of Representatives to retire, run for another office, resign, or die this cycle. In comparison, more than 30 House Democrats have announced that they will not run in this election.
