Since USA TODAY Sports began tracking coaches' salary in 2006, this is the highest single-year income for a college sports coach who is not on a buyout. In 2017, Alabama football coach Nick Saban earned $11.1 million, which included a $4 million signing bonus and $500,000 in incentive awards.

Rep. Bill Pascrell, D-N.J., sent a letter to a number of public and private institutions earlier this year, demanding details about their coaches' salary and raising issues about how their athletics departments fit with the educational objective that allows them to enjoy tax-exempt status.
"One of the most popular pleasures in America is rooting for Duke University sports teams. Fans and opponents of the Blue Devils should be wary of how federal tax benefits might be used to help pay nearly $13 million for one season of labor "According to Pascrell, who chairs the House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Oversight, "Because Americans deserve to know if their hard-earned money is being used to fund billionaire coaches, we're continuing our congressional investigation and focus on coaching contracts and tax rules."
Krzyzewski's income was between $7 million and $7.4 million on Duke's last four tax forms, with $1.2 million to $1.3 million deferred on preceding years' returns.
Duke is not compelled to make its employment contracts public because it is a private institution. It is a private, non-profit corporation. According to IRS guidelines, such businesses must provide compensation data for the calendar year ended within the fiscal year covered by the return, which in Duke's instance is June 30, 2021.
Michael Schoenfeld, a spokesman for Duke, told USA TODAY Sports in a statement:
"Mike Krzyzewski is the most successful college basketball coach in history, with a record and achievements that will almost certainly never be surpassed. Coach K's pay has always reflected his 42-year dedication to athletic and academic excellence at Duke, as well as his vast and lasting service to the university, community, and country."
Schoenfeld stated, referring to the $7.2 million in other reportable remuneration and the amount disclosed in the previous year: "This report contains a one-time payment of deferred compensation… that was built up over the years. It also includes remuneration paid out in 2020 but recorded on a prior (return) when it was earned."
Some members of Congress have recently expressed interest in the pay of college coaches. In December, Pascrell said that he had written letters to the presidents of LSU and the University of Southern California, voicing concerns about how their athletics departments are "furthering the educational reasons" for which the schools are tax-exempt.
Those letters followed the hirings of Brian Kelly from Notre Dame and Lincoln Riley from Oklahoma as football coaches at their respective schools. Pascrell then issued similar letters to Michigan State, Miami, Stanford, and Rutgers, requesting written comments on their football coaches' pay.
In March, he wrote to Auburn, Villanova, and Duke about the salary of men's basketball coaches.
