A 58-year-old Hawaiian surfer had his foot bit off by a shark while surfing off the coast of Honolulu, and his life was probably saved by spectators who used their surfboard leashes as a tourniquet to stop the bleeding.

According to authorities, an 8-foot tiger shark attacked Mike Morita, a 40-year veteran of the waves, on Sunday morning around 7 AM in Kewalo Basin.
The damaged limb was swiftly tied off by fellow surfers, and Morita was sent to a nearby hospital for treatment. According to authorities, Mike's survival likely depended on the other surfers' rapid thinking.
The surfer's family reports that Mike is in excellent spirits despite the highly traumatic occurrence, and they thank everyone who assisted.

He faces a challenging and protracted journey. Morita's son told a local news source, "My dad is a fighter and even though he's currently experiencing a setback, you all know that won't stop him.
MM had surgery when he checked into the hospital on Sunday, and his road to recovery has already started. Later this week, he will have a second surgery.
