During the busy month of May, which featured the ongoing war in Ukraine, information and analysis of all-things politics, and breaking news coverage of the tragic Uvalde, Texas school shooting, the Fox News Channel finished as the most-watched basic cable network, with "The Five" finishing as the No. 1 cable news program. It was Fox News' second-highest-rated May ever, trailing only May 2020, when the coronavirus dominated the news cycle during the early stages of the pandemic.

Fox News averaged 1.5 million total viewers every episode, compared to 634,000 for MSNBC and only 500,000 for CNN. Fox News increased its audience by 23% year over year, while MSNBC and CNN both saw double-digit declines. Fox News also dominated the advertiser-favored category of people aged 25-54, with an average of 229,000 viewers compared to 106,000 for CNN and 70,000 for MSNBC.

Fox News had 2.3 million viewers during primetime (8-11 p.m.), MSNBC had one million, and CNN had only 660,000. The primetime thrashing helped Fox News to extend its 10-month streak of outdrawing MSNBC and CNN combined in both total viewers and the crucial demo on weekdays.Despite airing well before primetime, which often draws a larger audience, "The Five" averaged 3.3 million viewers in May to finish as the most-watched program on cable news and earn the ratings crown. For the fifth time in the last six months, "The Five" has achieved the historic win.

"Tucker Carlson Tonight" came in second with 3.2 million viewers, followed by "Hannity," "Jesse Waters Primetime," and "Special Report with Bret Baier," with Fox News claiming 14 of the top 15 cable news shows.

Laura Ingraham, the namesake of "The Ingraham Angle," finished as the most-watched single female host on television news with 2.3 million people.

"The Rachel Maddow Show," which airs only on Mondays due to its namesake host's desire to focus on other projects, was MSNBC's most-watched show. On Tuesday through Friday, "MSNBC Prime" takes over Maddow's coveted 9 p.m. ET schedule, but the program with rotating hosts only averaged 1.1 million viewers, a far cry from Maddow's two-million average.

MSNBC had its lowest-rated month in the primetime demo since May 2004, and its lowest-rated month in the total demo since November 1999. MSNBC lost a whopping 48% of its primetime audience in the key demo between May 2021 and May 2022. However, Maddow's decision to work only once a week wasn't the only item dragging MSNBC down; Joy Reid's "ReidOut" had its lowest audience in both total viewers and the demo since its debut.

"Anderson Cooper 360," CNN's most popular show, averaged 759,000 viewers per episode, placing it in the top 25 of all cable news shows.

Despite broadcasting at 11 p.m. ET, "Gutfeld!" drew over two million people, outperforming MSNBC and CNN, and even outdrawing ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" and NBC's "The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon" in terms of total viewers. For the 14th month in a row, "FOX & Friends" averaged 1.4 million viewers, beating MSNBC's "Morning Joe" and CNN's long-struggling "New Day."

"Outnumbered," "America's Newsroom with Bill Hemmer and Dana Perino," "The Faulkner Focus," "America Reports with John Roberts and Sandra Smith," "The Story with Martha MacCallum," and "Your World with Neil Cavuto" all had great months, helping Fox News continue to dominate cable news.

Saturday's most watched program was "Unfiltered with Dan Bongino," while Sunday's most watched program was "Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo."

"Tucker Carlson Tonight" finished as the most-watched show in the critical category, averaging 522,000 people in the advertiser-coveted demo, as Fox News programs swept the top 15.
