Many Americans have debt from college loans that they have been making payments on for many years. According to Education Data, there are over 40 million borrowers who are paying off debt with an average balance of over $37,000.
The administration of President Joe Biden has started implementing initiatives to lessen this load, but for those who wish to take advantage of them, there are specific dates to keep in mind in order to meet important deadlines for necessary measures.June 30
The Supreme Court's ruling will determine how student loan forgiveness is implemented; the court has been considering the matter since November 22. On June 30, a decision about the loan forgiveness proposal is expected. Those who still owe money on their loans may be eligible for loan forgiveness soon after the Court's judgment if it approves the scheme or cannot decide by this deadline. The Biden administration will need to review the idea if the justices reject it.
30 August
The student loan moratorium extension will expire 60 days after June 30 or on the day the Supreme Court rules on the program for dealing with student debt, whichever occurs first. Except in the event that the Biden administration decides to extend the moratorium, federal student loan repayments would start up again around August 30.
31 December
The Income-Driven Repayment Adjustment, which the Biden administration proposed, promises to grant millions of debtors retroactive credit toward student debt forgiveness under IDR schemes. The Department of Education will make an adjustment that will cover earlier payback periods. The current effective date of this project is December 31.
