Richard Branson, a businessman from the United Kingdom, launched Virgin Galactic in 2004, and it will soon launch its first commercial mission to the outer reaches of space.
On Thursday, a Virgin Galactic instructor, the spacecraft's two pilots, and two Italian air force officers are expected to fly roughly 80 kilometers (50 miles) over the New Mexico desert. They will be joined by an Italian aerospace engineer from the National Research Council and two Italian air force officers. Two years have passed since the company's VSS Unity rocket plane completed its first fully crewed test spaceflight. The journey, designated Galactic 01, will last 90 minutes.
The VSS Unity rocket-powered spacecraft is launched into space by Virgin Galactic using a "mothership" plane with two pilots that takes off from a runway, soars to a great height, and then glides back to Earth.
During their scheduled voyage on Thursday, passengers in the spacecraft's cabin will have a brief period of weightlessness and will be able to see the curvature of the globe. At 15:00 GMT, a live webcast of the flight will start on Virgin Galactic's website. For its commercial trips, Virgin Galactic has sold about 800 tickets; 600 of those were sold between 2005 and 2014 for $200,000 to $250,000 apiece, and 200 have since been sold for $450,000 each.
The company's program experienced a disaster in 2014 when a spaceplane on a test flight broke apart midair, killing the co-pilot and critically injuring the pilot. Movie stars and other celebrities were among the first to purchase seats.
Virgin Galactic claims that the company's next scheduled commercial space mission, Galactic 02, is set to launch in August. Monthly space flights are then anticipated to begin operating after that.
With 32 space missions under its belt, Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin, an American billionaire, competes with Branson's endeavor in the "suborbital" space tourism market. Blue Origin's rocket has been halted after a mishap in September 2022 during an unmanned flight. In March, the corporation stated that spaceflight would shortly resume.
Following a mission failure in the United Kingdom, Branson's Virgin Orbit stated it would cease operations just before Thursday's scheduled launch.
The California-based corporation attempted to launch the first satellite from UK territory in January in the hopes that the venture would serve as a significant first step for space research from the UK.However, the LauncherOne rocket was unable to place its payload of US and UK espionage satellites into orbit and instead crashed into the sea.
