Mesut Ozil, a former midfielder for Real Madrid and Arsenal, has had his contract with Fenerbahce cancelled, according to the Turkish club.

Ozil didn't sign with the Turkish giants until January 2021, rejecting an offer from DC United after his contract with the Arsenal was cut short by six months.

He didn't enjoy his time in Istanbul. In 11 appearances during his debut half-season with the team, he registered just one assist.

He did produce more last season, scoring eight goals in 22 Super Lig games, but he and colleague Ozan Tufan were benched for the remainder of the season after an altercation with manager Ismail Kartal in March.

Ozil remained certain that he would not be leaving the club throughout his time away from the team, but it appears he has changed his mind as his release was announced on Wednesday.
The contract between our club and Mesut zil will be canceled by mutual consent, according to a statement.
We wish Mesut Zil luck for the remainder of his career, it says in the public statement.
It is unknown which teams may be interested in giving the playmaker a lifeline as Ozil now starts the process of looking for his next challenge.
