LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Dodgers have won their first game of the season. With a celebrity lovefest and a bold affirmation of her achievement as a gay woman daring to be herself, Ellen DeGeneres brought her nearly two-decade daytime talk show to a close on Thursday.

As "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" ended its Emmy-winning, 3,200-plus episode run that began in September 2003, DeGeneres and guests Jennifer Aniston, Billie Eilish, and Pink shared memories and affection with the audience."No one imagined this would work twenty years ago when we were attempting to sell the show." The opposition from TV stations was "not because it was a different kind of program, but because I was different," DeGeneres remarked.

When the syndicated show first aired, DeGeneres said she was forbidden from using the word "gay" or even the pronoun "we," because the latter implied she had a partner. She didn't say who imposed the restriction.

"I couldn't say wife because it wasn't legal for gay people to marry — but now I say 'wife' all the time," DeGeneres added, defiantly, as actress Portia de Rossi looked on from the studio audience. In 2008, they tied the knot.

To the tune of "Best of My Love," the emcee, who became known for urging her audience to join her in impromptu dances, shared some final moves with her sidekick and DJ, Stephen "tWitch" Boss.

DeGeneres is someone who inspires others, according to the dancer-choreographer, because she "has the confidence to walk out and be your real self."

Aniston, who handed DeGeneres a "Welcome" doormat on the show's debut episode, arrived with another that read, "Thanks for the Memories."" DeGeneres mentioned that the "Friends" star has appeared on the show 20 times.

"You're welcome," Aniston teased before becoming serious.

"I adore you, and I am grateful for everything you've done for the world over the last 19 years. The list goes on and on "she explained. She showed a montage of DeGeneres' career highlights, which included more than $400 million in donations to organizations and "deserving viewers."

"I'm in love with you, "During their conversation, an ecstatic Eilish informed DeGeneres. Pink, who performed "What About Us," stated, "I love you so much, it's dumb.""

DeGeneres' daytime reign came to an end in 2020, when the show was accused of being a hostile workplace, leading to the departure of three producers. DeGeneres apologized for "things that shouldn't have happened" on-air that fall, but defended herself as the same honest — if imperfect — person on- and off-camera.DeGeneres' talk show was her second significant television role. When she came out as lesbian in 1997 and brought her character on the ABC sitcom "Ellen" with her, she made an everlasting imprint. The following year, the show was cancelled.

For the final time as a talk show presenter, Ellen DeGeneres walks out to applause (The Independent)"My sitcom was canceled twenty-five years ago because they didn't want a lesbian in prime time once a week," she says. And I said, 'OK, then I'm going to be on daytime every day,'" DeGeneres stated on Thursday.

The comedian, actor, and producer has stated that she will contemplate her next career move after a trip to Rwanda with de Rossi. DeGeneres ended her daytime talk show with a message to her viewers, one she believed was worth repeating."I hope that if I've inspired you to be yourself, your actual authentic self, throughout the past 19 years." "And if someone is brave enough to tell you who they are, support them even if you don't understand," DeGeneres advised. "Opening your heart and mind makes you more compassionate, and compassion is what makes the world a better place."
