You read that right, Dr. Martin Luther King and his wife, Coretta King, paid for her parents' hospital bills when Julia Roberts of Ticket to Paradise was born. On Roberts' 55th birthday yesterday, the video of Roberts discussing the historical connection reappeared on Twitter. Betty Lou Bredemus and Walter Grady Roberts, who are Roberts' parents, created the Atlanta Actors and Writers Workshop and a kids' acting academy where Dr. King's kids took classes. Coretta King insisted on paying the hospital cost when Bredemus gave birth to Julia as a token of appreciation for their consideration of Black children in the 1960s. "Coretta Scott King once called my mother and asked if her kids could attend the Actors and Writers Workshop, a theater school my parents ran in Atlanta, as they were having trouble finding a place that would admit them.
Gayle King and Julia had a talk about their children. "My mother responded, 'Sure, come on over.'" They all grew close to us and helped us out of a tight spot. Would Sean Evans from Hot Ones have fully found this to be a funny fact when Julia was eating spicy wings? Absolutely. We were fortunate to get this historical connection on a silver platter rather than a hot sauce-smeared plate.
