Yes, the most recent pandemic is still ongoing. The majority of us don't want to consider the one after that. According to Bill Gates, we don't have that luxury.
At the TIME 100 Summit this week, the Microsoft entrepreneur turned philanthropist warned that the chances of another global pandemic arising in the next two decades are 50/50. It also has the potential to be even more terrible than Covid-19, which was already terrifying.
"Given the mortality toll — 20 million worldwide, a million in the United States — the epidemic could have been even more terrible. The death rate each case was just about 0.2 percent, which was lucky "Gates believes so.Are you scared yet? The possibility of a far worse epidemic is terrifying, especially when it comes from one of the few people who predicted the current one, but fortunately, Gates isn't all doom and gloom. He also claims that with careful resource allocation, the world may be well equipped to stop the next outbreak before it spreads globally. The topic is the focus of his most recent book, How to Prevent a Pandemic, although he has also presented his basic views at the Summit and in recent blog entries.
Gates is pushing for the creation of a permanent new World Health Organization staff to track novel diseases and disease outbreaks. For the unit, he proposes the creative acronym GERM (Global Epidemic Response and Mobilization). The multinational team of epidemiologists, data crunchers, logistics specialists, and other experts, "I'd be on the lookout for possible epidemics. GERM should be able to declare an outbreak as soon as it detects one and work with national governments and the World Bank to promptly generate funds for the response "Gates has drafted a letter.
The committee would also provide guidance on medicine and vaccine development, outbreak modeling, and response coordination. When they weren't actively hunting for the next deadly virus, the squad would practice drills in order to be ready for anything. It would have a permanent staff of around 3,000 people, according to Gates. You're probably thinking to yourself, "Wait, don't we already have something like this?" Because, in retrospect, it appears to be a no-brainer. However, it appears that the present sad answer is no. There are ad hoc and volunteer organizations dedicated to pandemic prevention, but no permanent, professional, multinational team exists.
Gates insists that assembling such a group would be well worth the money. According to his group, properly funding GERM would cost almost $1 billion every year. That's not small change, but as he points out, it's a drop in the bucket compared to the human and material expenses of the present pandemic.
"The amount of resources needed for any solution is actually rather small. This GERM squad costs around $1 billion per year, and we've already lost over $14 trillion due to the pandemic. Even in non-pandemic years, there would be advantages "At the Summit, Bill Gates made a point
He ended by expressing the hope that politicians will not be so sidetracked by our many other severe challenges that they will once again miss the boat when it comes to pandemic preparedness. I believe that a large number of us share his wish. The most important lesson for entrepreneurs is the same as it is for every other citizen of the world: pandemics continue to be a significant threat, and our governments aren't doing nearly enough to prepare. That is something we should all remember when we go to the polls. However, business owners should be aware that the demise of Covid does not signal the end of the threat posed by rogue microbes.
Just as governments should use the present pandemic as a wake-up call to consider what they may do if a similar disruption occurs again in the future, entrepreneurs should consider what they can do to put their firms on the best possible foundation for future upheaval. The world will continue to be chaotic; the best we can aspire for is to be as prepared as possible.
