Biden wants to increase benefits to fight US hunger

By boosting monthly subsidies that assist low-income Americans in purchasing food, the Biden administration is outlining its strategy to achieve the ambitious objective of eradicating hunger in the United States by 2030.

In a plan unveiled on Tuesday, the administration also aimed to promote healthy eating and exercise so that fewer individuals suffer from diet-related disorders including diabetes, obesity, and hypertension. It declared that it would endeavor to increase Medicaid and Medicare recipients' access to nutrition and obesity counseling. In a document describing the White House plan, Biden stated that "the effects of food insecurity and diet-related diseases are enormous, far-reaching, and disproportionately burden historically neglected groups." "Yet, if we emphasize the health of the country, food shortages and diet-related diseases are highly preventable."

This week, Biden will hold the first White House conference on hunger, nutrition, and health since 1969. That conference, held during the administration of President Richard Nixon, was a turning point that shaped US food policy for 50 years. It resulted in the food stamp program being significantly extended and gave rise to the Women, Infants and Children program, which now serves half of all newborns born in the US by giving mothers food aid, breastfeeding support, and parenting advice. The whole-of-government nature of the summit, according to Noreen Springstead, executive director of the anti-hunger organization WhyHunger, should result in greater alignment among the various federal agencies that address hunger issues, from the USDA and Health and Human Services to the Bureau of Indian Affairs. That would ideally assist Biden in "establishing the North Star that wholesome food is a human right for all people."

Springstead pointed out that philanthropic organizations and charities would need to make a significant investment if they were to take a really comprehensive strategy to addressing hunger and nutrition. Raising the minimum wage and paying employees "livable wages so that they are not standing in a food line" are other possible components."A stop to hunger"
Access to food has decreased throughout time as a result of reductions in federal programs, stigmas associated with welfare, significant changes in the management of the food and farming systems, and cuts to federal funding.

Democrat Joe Biden is hopeful that this week's conference will have a similar dramatic impact. However, Republican Nixon's objective was also "to put an end to hunger in America for all time."

However, according to the Food and Drug Administration, 10% of US households experienced food insecurity in 2021, which meant they were unsure if they would have access to enough food to sustain themselves or their families due to a lack of funds or resources.Biden will need support from the business community and an increasingly divided Congress to be successful. Some of the objectives seem similar to Michelle Obama's Let's Move program, which aims to combat childhood obesity and encourage healthy eating. The importance of having access to better, healthier food and exercise will also be emphasized at the conference. In his statement, Biden stated that during the previous 50 years, "we have learned so much more about nutrition and the importance of healthy food for our children's academic performance as well as about nutrition and its connections to illness prevention."

The White House proposal would increase the number of schoolchildren eligible for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, improve children's access to free meals, and provide more students with summer benefits. Congress would need to approve such changes. The other pillars of the strategy included creating new food packaging to verify the "healthy" claims made for some items, extending SNAP benefits to include fruits and vegetables, offering additional initiatives to get people moving outside, and increasing research funding.
