From the largest to the tiniest concerts in Europe, the Ghanaian musician has contributed by giving outstanding performances and inspiring the crowds along the way in the hopes of receiving a warm welcome on his return to his homeland.
However, on July 19, 2023, Black Sherif came back to Ghana from his run of performances in Europe and America and was taken into the custody by the Ghana Police over a very profound issue.
According to insider sources, the current Ghana Music Awards Artiste of the Year was arrested due to a dispute over a gig he had been scheduled to perform at. The said gig is an event to be hosted by Greece in August 2023.
An insider with knowledge of the case reveals that after getting in touch with Black Sherif's talent agency, which is situated outside of Ghana, Cruise People Limited agreed to a price of $40,000 (forty thousand dollars) on particular deliverables.
The promoter, who did not conduct business with Blacko directly, made a $20,000 opening deposit.
The insider asserts that "there was no agreement for a press conference and any video submission" during the preliminary talks with Black Sherif's talent management.
According to people familiar with the incident, the organizers insisted that the "Soja" singer was not the key to selling tickets for the Greece event, thus they did not fit the above into the schedules of the artists.
The insider noted that Blacko's performance was the only contractual requirement, and that the musician was not to promote the event in any other way as part of the agreement.
Over the failure of not getting the promotional video from Black Sherif, the show promoter threatened to sue the agency. The agency offered to refund the $20,000 initial deposit since the money was paid to them and not directly to the artiste, debunking claims of Blacko having an account in London where money was paid.
However, the show promoter demanded $50,000 instead of the $20,000, the source claimed.
According to a spokesman from the promoter, Ghanaian blogger Stephen Mingle, better known by his online handle GH Hyper, who broke the story of Black Sherif's alleged arrest, he was the one who suggested the singer of "Second Sermon" be booked for the performance. He revealed that Mr. Van, the show's promoter, is his uncle.
The blogger claims that Black Sherif received $20,000 in partial payment for the $40,000 fee he demanded for the yearly cruise ship display.
"The first edition, he used Gramps Morgan and Amakye Dede. Normally he doesn't like much hype about it because he has his own target audience," the representative said.
According to the speaker, he even spoke to Blacko, and was directed by him to who to speak to concerning the agreement. They had a $40,000 agreement and paid $20,000 as part payment after which Blacko was supposed to appear at his office because he had organized a press conference and they all agreed to make an official announcement.
However, on the scheduled day, Blacko failed to appear although he was in Ghana at that moment. He further asserts that Blacko was given a second opportunity to participate in a little promotional video of under a minute, but he declined. The Ghanaian musician's lack of interest in the performance was subsequently discovered by the show's promoter, who asked for a refund, which Black Sherif's crew later turned down.
Gramps Morgan and Baba Saddick, according to GH Hyper, were summoned to mediate but Black Sherif's group apparently ignored them as well. Before the performer departed the country, the incident was then reported to national security with the intention of picking him up before his departure.
On the evening of July 19, however, Black Sherif was picked up at the airport after the National Security and CID learned of his presence. The Ghanaian singer was asked to provide his side of the tale with the Ghana Police Service and has since been freed, according to persons familiar with the issue.
