J. Cole was a habitual smoker in elementary school before he started smoking in his rap battle, but he thanks his mother with getting him to stop!
On Golden State Warriors general manager Bob Myers' "Lead By Example" podcast, Cole made the startling admission that he started smoking at the age of six in an effort to impress the older kids in his Fayetteville, North Carolina neighborhood.
Cole claims that he did not grow up in a rigorous environment, but when his elder brother Zach learned of his antics, he alerted his mother, who immediately smelt the cigarette smoke on him and gave him an "ass whooping that changed his life"
The rapper from Dreamville recalled feeling regret for originally lying to his mother about smoking and changing his ways, which led him to discover his genuine passion for music creation. That obviously worked out for him.
Despite hinting at retirement after five platinum albums, he continues to manage his stable of Dreamville artists, who recently collaborated on the "Creed III" soundtrack.
Some habits are hard to break, but luckily Cole ditched the loosies. They could've stunted his growth and rapper voice!!!
