Once upon a time, John Cusack was a true leading man. Hit movies like High Fidelity and Being John Malkovich cemented his status as a beloved everyman, but something has been off lately. He's following Nicolas Cage's footsteps throughout his career. What's going on is as follows. From the Large to the Small Screen
Cusack might still be seen on the big screen as late as 2014. He was a member of the Hot Tub Time Machine, portrayed Richard Nixon in Lee Daniels' The Butler, and portrayed Brian Wilson in the Beach Boys film Love & Mercy. In 2015, he appeared in Hot Tub Time Machine 2 and played a supporting role in Spike Lee's Chi-Raq. We had no idea at the time that this would be the start of Cusack's new career.John Cusack Makes a Direct-to-Video Film
Cusack began appearing in direct-to-streaming films in 2013 and has continued to do so since then. It's a simple method to make some cash, and it's not an unusual move. Cage began doing the same thing about the same time. Cage starred in six straight-to-video films in 2017. This features a John Waters classic, Mom & Dad, as well as a film starring John Cusack, Arsenal.Cusack has appeared in a number of action films in recent years, many of which feature men with unusual names. He plays Elias Van Dorne in Singularity, and Vernon Sarsfield in Distorted. Pursuit, his most recent album, was released earlier this year. Why would Cusack make the switch from Hollywood to this industry? Well, there are a plethora of options. Straight-to-video releases can be quite profitable. Studios can produce them at a low cost, so making a small profit is not difficult. We doubt Cusack, Cage, or anyone else would bother unless there was a nice payout on the table.Cusack may be on his way out of Hollywood for a variety of reasons. Cusack tweeted an anti-Semitic image in 2019. It included a remark credited to Voltaire but originating with a neo-Nazi. Cusack at first blamed the tweet on a "bot," but then justified it. He later apologized and took down the tweet.
Cusack gave a stunning interview to the Guardian in 2014, in which he made no apologies for his views on Hollywood. "It's a whorehouse," he explained, "and people go insane." He also slammed the corporate structure, which places all power in the hands of franchises. It's easy to see why Disney wouldn't want to call him after that. In any event, if you really want to see a Cusack movie, he's not difficult to track down. Simply avoid going to the movies.
