"Bad," the second single from Michael Jackson's seventh studio album of the same name, was released in 1987. Martin Scorsese was chosen to direct the music video for the song, which was made in the style of an 18-minute short film (via Michael Jackson). Edmund Perry, a 17-year-old who was shot and killed by a police officer in what media described as police aggression against a Black person, was the inspiration for the film, according to The New York Times.

The musical segment of the short film was shot in color, while the rest of the film was shot in black and white. Darryl, a student who had recently completed a semester of school in a white-dominated class, was played by Jackson. Darryl is mocked and chastised by his buddies after refusing to join them in committing robbery when he returns to his city home. Wesley Snipes portrayed one of the characters.According to Rolling Stone, Wesley Snipes was chosen for the role of Mini Max from hundreds of others who auditioned. Snipes was an unknown actor in 1987 when he shot the "Bad" music video. He had just finished his debut film, "Wildcats," the year before. Michael Jackson assumed he was a member of a gang in real life, Snipes said in an interview with Conan O'Brien.Snipes claims that the King of Pop was nervous when filming "Bad" in Harlem, New York. While some were overjoyed to see Jackson, others were not. When Jackson asked Snipes whether he was afraid, the actor replied, "I'm not afraid." "This is Harlem, baby, Mike! We spent our childhoods here." According to GQ, Snipes said how he put the musician at ease by holding his hand while walking down the streets. That was the start of their connection, and they kept in touch a few times over the years to talk about their shared interests.Wesley Snipes also revealed during his interview with Conan O'Brien that musician Prince auditioned for the same part as him, but that he "blew Prince out of the water" (per Rolling Stone). Prince, on the other hand, has a different perspective on the situation. Prince acknowledged to being cast as Mini Max in a 1997 interview with Chris Rock, but he declined after reading the opening line of "Bad," which reads, "Your butt is mine."

Jackson blended street dance with a music video inspired by the musical "West Side Story." Martin Scorsese stated that the dance sequence alone took two weeks to shoot, adding that the dancing enthralled him. According to Rolling Stone, the director stated Jackson was quite particular about the choreography but was open to his suggestions. Snipes' acting was also praised by Scorsese, who described him as having a "powerful presence." When it was first released, the video received a lot of attention, and it now has over 74 million views on YouTube.
