mercedes- The future electric G-class SUV, which was previewed by the EQG concept last year, will be capable of doing a "tank turn," according to Benz.
The EQG spins 360 degrees on its own axis in the video, thanks to its four electric motors.
The EQG will be available in 2024.
Mercedes-Benz has big aspirations for electrification, with the EQB crossover, EQS luxury sedan, smaller EQE sedan, and EQS SUV already on the market. Even the boxy G-class, with its 577-hp V-8 AMG G63 edition, will eventually get an electric version. The dazzling EQG concept disclosed very little about the mechanical components of the electrified G-class last year. Mercedes has now given a glimpse of what the production version of the EQG will be capable of by demonstrating one of its signature stunts, the G-turn, at a recent press briefing. The G-turn will appear quite familiar if you remember Rivian's "tank turn" from 2019. The EQG has four electric motors, one for each tire, and uses them to spin the SUV in place by moving one side of the vehicle in the opposite direction of the other. The video shows a camouflaged prototype rotating 360 degrees on its own axis on a patch of dirt, with this stunt likely to operate only off the beaten path. Rivian has yet to incorporate the tank-turn feature into the production R1T, but with the EQG not planned until 2024, Mercedes has plenty of time to iron out the wrinkles.
Mercedes also confirmed that the EQG will be equipped with an independent front suspension and a rigid rear axle designed specifically for electric vehicles at the press conference. The EQG will also come with a lithium-ion battery with a silicon anode chemistry, which increases energy density and hence range. More information on the electrified off-road icon should continue to emerge in the coming years.
