On Sunday, Ariana DeBose took home the Academy Award for outstanding actress in a supporting role for "West Side Story." It's her first nomination and win for an Academy Award. For her role as Anita in the musical picture, DeBose has gained accolades. She is the category's first openly queer woman of color to win.
"Even in this strange world we live in, dreams do come true… thank you Steven Spielberg, you are stuck with me now," DeBose exclaimed dramatically when she walked the stage.

She also praised her mother, who was in the crowd as a visitor. "There is absolutely a space for us," DeBose remarked of growing up queer.

For this role, DeBose has already received a Golden Globe, a BAFTA, and a SAG Award.

Rita Moreno was nominated for the same role in 1962 and won the prize. Moreno made history as the first Hispanic actress to win for best supporting actress in the original "West Side Story" film, in which she played Anita.

Valentina, the owner of a drugstore, is played by Moreno.
