According to Ukraine's military intelligence chief, Russian President Vladimir Putin may be planning to split Ukraine in two, similar to North and South Korea.

Russia's operations around Kyiv had failed, according to Brig. Gen. Kyrylo Budanov, the head of Ukraine's Defense Intelligence Agency, and it was now impossible for the Russian army to overturn the Ukrainian government. Putin's war was now focusing on the country's south and east, he claimed.

"There's grounds to suspect he's thinking about a 'Korean' scenario for Ukraine." That is, [Russian soldiers] will attempt to establish a dividing line between our country's unoccupied and occupied parts. In fact, it is an attempt to divide Ukraine into North and South Korea."

Budanov stated that Russia remains committed to building a land corridor connecting the Russian border with Crimea, and that he expects an endeavor to integrate Russian-occupied territory into a unified entity.

"We are already seeing attempts to establish "parallel" government in the seized territory and force people to give up [the Ukrainian] currency," Budanov said, adding that he expects Ukrainians to oppose Russia's political initiatives.
