Five former Memphis police officers have been charged with murder and other crimes in connection with Tyre Nichols' death by a Tennessee grand jury, according to reports on Thursday.

Police Chief C.J. Davis claimed that the officers, Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Emmitt Martin III, Desmond Mills Jr., and Justin Smith, broke departmental rules during a traffic stop on January 7 that resulted in Nichols' death. As a result, the policemen were fired on Friday.

According to Shelby County Jail records, Martin, Smith, and Bean were charged with second-degree murder, three counts of official misconduct, two charges of aggravated kidnapping, and one count of conspiring to commit aggravated assault.

Second-degree murder, two counts of official misconduct, two counts of aggravated kidnapping, one case of official oppression, and one count of conspiring to commit aggravated assault were all brought against Mills and Haley.

Tyre Nichols' death was caused by all of their conduct, and they are all accountable, said Shelby County District Attorney Steve Mulroy to media.

The most serious charge, second-degree murder, "is a knowing killing," according to the district attorney.

According to officials, a video of the meeting with Nichols will be made available after 6 p.m. local time on Friday.
