Former president Donald Trump is dealing with fallout from a divisive online remark he made in which he attacked Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), which many people saw to be a threat.
Trump criticized McConnell for approving a plan to fund the government until December in a post on his Truth Social platform late on Friday. Elaine Chao, who was Trump's transportation secretary and was born in Taiwan, was also disparaged by him in racist terms, being referred to as "his China loving wife, Coco Chow!"
The tweet was a new low point in the two Republican leaders' deteriorating relationship. Trump has frequently criticized McConnell's stances in negotiations and urged GOP senators to elect a new leader. As a result of Trump's refusal to accept the 2020 election and subsequent attempts to alter the results, as well as the attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, their working relationship frequently became hostile.
A comment request made on Saturday did not receive a prompt response from McConnell's office. The interpretation of the post as a threat or invitation to violence was deemed "absurd" by a Trump official, who also suggested that the reference to a death wish was "political" rather than literal.According to spokeswoman Taylor Budowich, "Mitch McConnell is murdering the Republican Party via weakness and cowardice." The Republican Party and our country will be saved by President Trump and the America First advocates in Congress, according to the statement, "He plainly has a political death wish for himself and the Republican Party."
Trump's inflammatory remarks have frequently prompted his supporters to use violence. In the heat of the moment and during court proceedings, rioters claimed they thought they were carrying out Trump's instructions. After opposing Trump, lawmakers from both parties have come under increased pressure.
More recently, a shooter attempted to break into the FBI's Cincinnati office while writing about it on Truth Social, in retaliation to Trump's attacks on the agency in response to a search of his Mar-a-Lago estate. Police later shot and killed him.
Trump's most recent tweet criticizing McConnell was met with a response from prominent Republican attorney Robert Kelner: "He understands exactly what he's doing, and his irresponsibility knows no bounds." “Despicable.”
After the attack on Jan. 6, Chao announced his resignation from Trump's Cabinet, saying it had "seriously upset me in a way I simply cannot set aside." Even though he did not vote to convict Trump, McConnell criticized Trump in a speech delivered after the impeachment trial the following month, calling him "practically and ethically accountable for instigating the events of that day."
McConnell made unsuccessful attempts to persuade moderate Republican governors like Chris Sununu of New Hampshire, Larry Hogan of Maryland, and Doug Ducey of Arizona to run for the Senate during this year's primary. In other elections, McConnell's supporters intervened to defeat pro-Trump candidates like Eric Greitens in Missouri and Don Bolduc in New Hampshire, but they did not speak out against candidates who had received Trump's endorsement, including Blake Masters in Arizona and Herschel Walker in Georgia. Although he has recently expressed increased confidence in the party's chances, McConnell has publicly complained that some of the party's nominees are making it difficult to regain control of the chamber.
