According to police, six people—including an unborn child—were shot dead at a Jehovah’s Witness Kingdom hall in Hamburg, Germany.
German nationals aged 33 to 60 made up the four men and two women who died. If the mother, who was seven months pregnant, was also killed, it remains unknown.
According to the authorities, four of the other eight injuries were significant, and among them were a Ukrainian and a citizen of Uganda.
Interior Minister Andy Grote of Hamburg referred to it as the “biggest crime in Hamburg’s recent history,” praised the police for their quick action, and said that they “likely halted the attack.”
“The culprit moved to the first floor when police arrived and killed himself,” he added.
Police said there was no evidence to suggest the incident was a terrorist attack.
Matthias Tresp, the head of operations for Hamburg Police, said officers did not at first realize they had found the body of the shooter in the building. “We only knew there was one lifeless male on the floor with a weapon next to him,” he said, adding that police did not use their own firearms.
As the police came, the perpetrator moved to the first floor, where he later killed himself.
The event was not a terrorist attack, according to the police.
The body of the gunman was discovered in the building at first, according to Matthias Tresp, head of operations for Hamburg Police. He added that police did not use their own weapons and that all they knew of a dead male on the ground with a weapon next to him was that he was a man.
Olaf Scholz, the chancellor of Germany, called it “a horrific act of violence” in a tweet early on Friday.
“I’m thinking of them and their families. Scholz, a former mayor of Hamburg, added, “And with the security officers, who have had a terrible deployment behind them.
The United States government “deeply condemns the senseless act of violence that happened at a Jehovah’s Witnesses hall in Hamburg, Germany,” a representative for the U.S. State Department stated.
