Washington encourages Beijing to keep channels of communication open.

DC, Washington As global competition and tensions between Washington and Beijing continue, the top diplomat of the United States reportedly warned his Chinese counterpart that the two nations must keep lines of communication open.

On the fringes of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York on Friday, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with Wang Yi, the foreign minister of China.According to a summary of the discussions by the State Department, "The Secretary stressed the importance to maintain open lines of communication and properly manage the US-PRC [People's Republic of China] relationship, especially during times of difficulty."

After reassuring Beijing that American soldiers would defend Taiwan in the event of a Chinese invasion, US President Joe Biden enraged Beijing just a few days prior to the meeting. This week, China, which asserts sovereignty over Taiwan, stated that it "strongly deplores and condemns" Biden's comments.

The one China policy, under which the US exclusively recognizes the Chinese government, was emphasized by Blinken, according to the State Department on Friday. This policy states that Washington is committed to "maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait."

Although the US does not recognize Taiwan's independence, the island nation and the US have trade and security ties.

Following US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's travel to Taiwan last month in defiance of China's claim to the island, tensions between Washington and Beijing reached unprecedented heights.Biden stated that the US opposes "unilateral alterations in the status quo" in Taiwan by any side in his address to the UNGA on Wednesday. Additionally, he emphasized that Washington does not desire a conflict with Beijing.

As we manage altering geopolitical trends, Biden added, "Let me be clear about the competition between the United States and China: The United States will conduct itself as a sensible leader.""We don't want any fights. A cold war is not what we want. No country is required to choose between the United States and any other partner, according to us.According to the State Department's statement about his meeting with Wang, Blinken "emphasized that maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait is important to regional and global security and prosperity."

The statement also said that the US secretary of state reiterated concerns against China supporting Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Wang earlier on Friday called for "win-win collaboration" between Washington and Beijing based on "equality and respect," according to the Chinese state news agency Xinhua.

Wang also stated that if the Taiwan issue was handled improperly, it would probably have "disruptive consequences on bilateral relations," according to Xinhua.
