Coco Gauff has amassed a long list of accolades in her spectacular rise from tennis prodigy to world celebrity. She was the youngest player to ever make it to the U.S. Open girls' final at the age of 13. She beat Venus Williams at Wimbledon as the youngest qualifier in the tournament's modern history at the age of 15.
Gauff, who is now 18 years old, is the youngest top 50 player in the world and ranked No. 1 in doubles and No. 12 in singles.
Gauff is excellent both on and off the court, though. She uses her immense popularity for social good, speaking passionately at a Black Lives Matter gathering and supporting her little Florida village. She is a kind role model, a businesswoman, and a fashion influencer, and all of these qualities are on full display with the launch of her new signature sneaker right before her appearance in the U.S. Open.
Gauff's early career has reached a turning point with the release of the '90s-inspired Coco CG1 shoe, which adds her to the select group of pro athletes with their own sneakers. Gauff collaborated with New Balance while still a high school student to create the mid-top, retro-looking sneaker with vivid colors and unique designs drawn from her life.Gauff exclaims, "I am so thrilled for everyone to finally see it. "I don't believe it has yet dawned on me how significant this moment is. To see individuals wearing my distinctive shoes will be very surreal.
Gauff used her tech tools to help her squeeze design meetings between training, homework, and travel for two years. She utilized her Surface laptop to go between taking online classes, viewing training data, and making business calls. She has been a Microsoft partner since 2019.
While the design team was in Boston and she was working in Florida during the epidemic, she was still able to fully engage by sharing vibrant mood boards, watching the shoe take shape, and more using video sessions on Microsoft Teams.
Gauff projected a massive Teams meeting onto a large screen in the sports bar her father owned to get things started. She was able to ask questions and provide feedback while also seeing colors, fabrics, and motivational fashion photographs thanks to technology. If we didn't have that capability, she claims, "the meeting wouldn't have been as successful." The New Balance staff made the entire process quite enjoyable. They desired that I actually own the shoe. They brought a ton of ideas, advice, and beneficial insights, both in terms of performance and design.
A technical, fashionable tennis shoe filled with unique elements is the result of the cooperation. The park where Gauff first learnt to play tennis is commemorated by the name of one of the original colorways, Pompey. She is reminded of Miami sunsets by the vivid combination of pink, purple, and orange.
Pompey Park's coordinates are written on the shoe's left toe, and her father's quote, "You can change the world with your racket," is written on the right toe. Her brothers' names are on the laces, Gauff's signature is on the tongue, and pictures of a basketball and a winged foot pay homage to her parents' undergraduate athletic endeavors. (Her mom ran track; her dad played basketball.)
According to Evan Zeder, head of Tennis Sports Marketing for New Balance, "Coco is an amazing collaborator on and off the court." She had brilliant ideas that not only inspired our designers but also made her sneaker stand out on the shelf.
The piece was a part of Gauff's growing influence and expression on topics including advocacy, business, and fashion. In the previous year, she collaborated with Microsoft to support the expansion of computer education for young people at a nonprofit in her native Delray Beach, Florida. Gauff recognized the potential of digital technology as a full-time distant student and an athlete who uses biometric data to enhance her performance. When I was younger, I had a lot of wonderful role models, so if I can serve in that capacity for today's young fans, I consider it an honor.
She also enjoys celebrating at Pompey Park and hosting events at her dad's bar in her hometown, which has long supported her (which closed during the pandemic).
Gauff was therefore delighted to provide technological assistance to the charitable Achievement Centers for Children and Families. She was especially happy to surprise schoolchildren with a special appearance on Microsoft Teams during a coding lesson.
She says, "I love helping my small community because I can actually see an impact." Since everyone in Delray has helped me since the beginning, I always want to give back.
Gauff's influence in the fashion industry is expanding as well; in addition to endorsing New Balance since she was 14 years old, she also offers design suggestions. Gauff debuted her first clothes collection with the firm last year in addition to her iconic sneaker, infusing it with her love of street style, '90s style, and vibrant colors. She remarks, "I adore how fashion is a way of self-expression. "I firmly believe that it is a means of expressing your liveliness and creativity. I've started choosing my outfits lately based on the shoes I want to wear that particular day.
Off the court, Gauff has distinguished herself as a generation's leading advocate on issues such as LGBTQIA+ rights, gun control, and racial justice. She takes her role as a young, Black female leader seriously and wants to encourage others. She draws inspiration from Venus and Serena Williams as well as her father's uplifting comment.
I had a lot of wonderful role models growing up, so if I can be that for young fans today, I consider it a privilege, the actress says. I constantly strive to make good use of my platform and draw attention to problems that are significant to me.
Gauff is a likeable youngster who recently graduated from high school and is adored by her admirers when she opens up about her struggles to obtain a driver's license or shares happy cap-and-gown images of herself after graduation.
I strive to be as relatable and honest as I can, she claims. "I want people to realize how similar we are. It's okay to feel joy or sorrow, to make mistakes, and to rejoice in small and significant victories. It all began with a dream, and you may achieve great things if you keep having big dreams and put in a lot of effort.
