During a surprise visit to Ukraine, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of "war crimes," while also promising more weapons for Kyiv and fresh sanctions against Russia.
"Vladimir Putin is clearly accountable for horrendous war crimes," Trudeau said during a news conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv on Sunday. He went on to say that "accountability is required" and that he had "firsthand observed the horror of Russia's criminal war."
Trudeau stated, "Today, I'm announcing further military assistance, drone cameras, satellite imagery, small guns, ammunition, and other support, including financing for demining efforts.""We're also imposing fresh sanctions on 40 Russian individuals and five businesses, including oligarchs and regime close friends in the defense sector, who are all participating in Putin's war."
On Sunday, the Group of Seven (G7), of which Canada is a member, imposed a fresh set of penalties and committed to reduce its reliance on Russian energy, particularly oil imports.
As part of its efforts to maintain food security, Canada will also donate $25 million to the United Nations' World Food Programme, as well as remove trade taxes on all Ukrainian imports to Canada for the coming year.
Trudeau paid a visit to Irpin, a hamlet outside of Kyiv that was the scene of severe fighting between Ukrainian and Russian troops before the Russians retreated in late March.
