Barcelona's club logo is one of the most well-known images in football, although few people are aware of its roots.
The symbol commemorates Barcelona's rich past, yet it has frequently been misread, leaving supporters with questions such as "Why is the England flag on the Barcelona badge?
The reality about the Barcelona badge is as follows.History of Barcelona's badge
Soccer Club In November 1899, Switzerland native Hans Gamper (better known in Catalonia as Joan) sent out an invitation to form a football team. A few natives, as well as Englishmen John and William Parsons, joined up.This club's badge was just a rhombus with portions divided between the Catalan Bars of Aragon and Saint George's Cross. The fact that Saint George is the patron saint of both England and Barcelona has nothing to do with the Parsons' early engagement.
The first submissions for an exclusive crest were made in 1910. It was a streamlined shield that replaced the rhombus while still incorporating the cross and Catalan colors, as well as the addition of blue and red stripes in the bottom half of the emblem, which symbolized the team's early uniforms. The initials F.C.B – Football Club de Barcelona – were across the center.
Barcelona has adjusted the formula over the years without making any big changes. The shape of the shield and the boldness of the colors were changed in 1920, and F.C.B was inscribed on a yellow backdrop. This would turn to black 16 years later.
Then, in 1941, Barcelona had an identity crisis. F.C.B became C.F.B, which became C.de F.B in 1949.
C.F.B was reintroduced in 1960, with minor cosmetic changes, before the legendary F.C.B was reintroduced in 1974. After a few more tweaks, a badge was created in 1975 and used until 2002.
Barcelona decided to modernize its design in 2002, handing the keys to designer Claret Serrahima. He gave us the design we know today: a sleek, basic shield with few decorations and no dots in the truncated letters. FCB it is.Unique logos
Barcelona has tried to maintain their traditional logo wherever possible, as a club that takes pleasure in its identity.
They did announce plans to modernize the design for the 2019/20 season, including removing the initials and a strip across the middle of the shield, but those ideas have since been scrapped.
New Barcelona logo
Barcelona is expected to alter their logo in the not-too-distant future. They intended to back in 2018, but didn't, demonstrating that the will to bring about change exists.
