Abe maintained his position as a pivotal player inside the governing Liberal Democratic Party, where he presided over a powerful faction. Abe, a well-known hard-line conservative within his party, served as Chief Cabinet Secretary under Junichiro Koizumi from 2005 to 2006. After being chosen as the leader of the Liberal Democratic Party, he was appointed prime minister of Japan in 2006 at the age of 52, becoming the nation's youngest leader since World War II.

Before resigning due to ongoing health problems, he served from 2006 to 2007, then again from 2012 to 2020. He then disclosed that he was receiving treatment for the chronic bowel condition ulcerative colitis.

Abe had particularly solid ties to Washington, but his right-wing nationalist ideas had damaged ties with China and Korea, two neighbors. His controversial visit to the Yasukuni Shrine, which honors war criminals, and legislation approved under his administration permitting Japan's Self-Defense Forces to fight with friends abroad infuriated the neighbors. Abe was a vociferous opponent of Beijing as well, supporting Taiwan's push for recognition as an independent democratic state.

Abe and Donald Trump may have had deeper ties than any previous leader. After the former president was elected in 2016, he was the first foreign head of state to meet with him. The two leaders met for a total of 14 times in official capacity, with Trump referring to Abe as "the greatest prime minister in Japan's history." During Abe's second stint as prime minister, they also played golf together five times, according to rumors.

Abe pushed tough economic policies known as "Abenomics" throughout his time in office to stimulate the stagnating Japanese economy after two decades of uninterrupted prosperity. His "three arrows" policy included government spending, economic structural reforms, and monetary easing from the Bank of Japan. Although Abe's policy changes cut real interest rates and raised inflationary expectations in the market, there are ongoing discussions in Japan about whether "Abenomics" was ultimately successful.

Abe was raised in a politically influential family. Nobusuke Kishi, the patriarchal ancestor who helped form the ruling Liberal Democratic Party in 1955 and ruled Japan from 1957 to 1960. His father, Shintaro Abe, served as Japan's foreign minister from 1982 to 1986 and was a prominent member of the LDP.
The funeral arrangements for Abe have not yet been made public.
