According to Ukrainian officials, Russia bombarded Ukraine early on Friday morning with long-range cruise missiles.
According to the Ukrainian Air Force, 23 missiles and two drones were launched from Russian aircraft in the vicinity of the Caspian Sea at around 4 a.m. local time (9 p.m. ET). According to the report, Ukrainian air defenses intercepted twenty-one of the missiles.
But missiles did strike Uman, in the Cherkasy region south of Kiev, and Dnipro in central Ukraine.
Ihor Klymenko, Ukraine's Minister of Internal Affairs, reported that one of the damaged buildings contained 46 flats, 27 of which were entirely demolished. The removal of all the debris, he warned, might take a day.
According to Yulia Norovkova, a press representative for the Cherkasy region state emergency service, emergency personnel at the scene "have almost finished clearing the ground floor [of the building]" and will continue searching the building.
CNN also spoke to a local woman, Liuda, whose friend lived on the eighth floor. When she heard the building had been hit, Liuda rushed there to find that her friend had survived, but her friend’s husband had been hospitalized and their two daughters, aged 7 and 13, were still missing.
