On Sunday, Pope Francis canonized ten new saints at the Vatican for the first time in more than two years.Titus Brandsma, a Dutch clergyman and journalist murdered in a Nazi prison camp in 1942, is one of the ten new saints. According to the Associated Press, the others include Devashayam, an 18th-century Indian convert, as well as four priests and four nuns who established religious orders in Europe.Brandsma, who strove to resist Nazi propaganda in publications, was proposed as the co-patron saint of journalists by a group of Dutch and German journalists. However, Francis has yet to respond to the suggestion.
St. Francis de Sales is the current patron saint of journalists.According to the Associated Press, Devashayam, also known as Lazarus, preached to India's lower strata before being caught and hanged in 1752.
Devashayam and Brandsma are both regarded martyrs.
Following the liturgy, Francis walked for around 15 minutes to greet cardinals and bishops, showing that his recent knee ailment, which had caused him to use a wheelchair, has significantly improved.
