Georgia Governor Brian Kemp has a large lead over his Republican opponent, former Senator David Perdue, according to a new survey released ahead of the May 24 primary.Kemp received 60% of Republican primary voters in Georgia, compared to only 28% for the former senator, according to a Fox News survey released on Wednesday.Kemp's popularity has soared since a Fox News poll in March saw him with 50% of the vote versus Perdue's 29%.
Perdue has been endorsed by Donald Trump, who has backed the former president's baseless claims of huge voter fraud and other abnormalities in the 2020 presidential election.
Former Vice President Mike Pence is expected to speak at a rally supporting Kemp on May 23, a day before voters go to the polls.
The Fox News poll of 1,004 Georgia Republican primary voters was conducted from May 12 to 16 and has a margin of error of +/- 3%.
According to the study, 36% of respondents said Trump's endorsement of Perdue had no impact on their opinions, while 37% said it made them more supporting and 24% said it made them less supportive.
The Georgia GOP primary could be the first serious fight between Trump and Pence since they departed office on January 20, 2021.
Pence has defended his conduct on January 6, 2021, and separated himself from Trump.
Trump has repeatedly chastised Kemp over the 2020 election results, much like he has Pence. President Joe Biden won Georgia, a traditionally red state.
Kemp defended Georgia's election results vehemently, while former Senator Perdue made charges of electoral fraud a centerpiece of his primary campaign.
In an April ad, Perdue accused Kemp of allowing the election to be rigged and blamed him for the country's plight under Biden.
"Folks, it all began right here when Brian Kemp sold us out and allowed extremists to steal the election," Perdue explained.
"It's enough. I'll make certain that our elections are never rigged again "said the former senator.'Successful Governor' is a term used to describe a governor who has been successful
Pence dubbed Kemp "one of America's most successful conservative governors" while announcing his visit to Georgia last week. Pence's support for Kemp will fuel rumors that he may run for president in 2024.
At a rally in the state in March, Trump campaigned for Perdue, but Kemp's lead over his Republican opponent has only grown since then. The Georgia governor election will be another test of his endorsement's power, which has yielded mixed outcomes in recent primaries.
