Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) ripped into fellow Republicans who have circulated and continue to support misleading information regarding the 2020 election, claiming they have failed to uphold their constitutional duties and should be disqualified from future leadership posts.
"I'm going to fight those individuals. In an interview with Jonathan Karl of ABC News that aired on Sunday, Cheney, who last week lost her Wyoming congressional seat to a rival backed by Donald Trump, declared, "I'm going to fight to help their opponents."
Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) were singled out by Cheney as two senators who she said should be barred from holding office in the future because of their efforts to tamper with the outcome of the 2020 election. The first senator to promise to oppose certifying Joe Biden's victory over former President Donald Trump was Senator Hawley. After that, 130 representatives and six other senators joined Cruz."I think certainly when you look at someone like Josh Hawley, or somebody like Ted Cruz, both of whom know better, both of whom know exactly what the role of Congress is—in terms of our constitutional obligations with respect to presidential elections—and yet both of whom took steps that fundamentally threatened the constitutional order and structure in the wake of the last election," the author says. So, you see, in my opinion, they are both no longer qualified to hold public office, she remarked.
Additionally, Cheney criticized Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R), who has been aggressively working to put Trump-backed election skeptics to office, and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, who supported Cheney's opponent in the primary election last week. These hard-right candidates include Blake Masters for senator from Arizona, Kari Lake for governor of Arizona, Doug Mastriano for governor of Pennsylvania, and JD Vance for senator from Ohio.Rep. "DeSantis is currently supporting election skeptics in his campaigns. And I believe that is something about which we ought to give serious thought. You either fundamentally embrace and believe in our constitutional framework, or you don't, she said.
McCarthy, the front-runner to be speaker the following year, was criticized by Cheney for being unfit for a position of such authority.
"The House Speaker is the next in line to become President. I don't think he should be speaker of the House, and I think that's been made very clear, she said. "It requires someone who understands and recognizes their duty, their oath, and their obligation. He's been completely unfaithful to the Constitution and demonstrated a total lack of understanding of the significance and importance of the role of speaker.
As for her own future, Cheney said she is considering a 2024 presidential run herself, though she would not specify whether it would be as a Republican or Independent.
