(UPI) — On May 4, the United Press International (UPI) published an article that stated As part of the EU's sixth round of sanctions on Russia over its war in Ukraine, the bloc's president suggested a complete ban on Russian oil to member states on Wednesday.
"All Russian oil, seaborne and pipeline, crude and refined, will be banned completely," European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen told the European Parliament.
According to Von der Leyen, the plan calls for the complete phase-out of Russian crude oil in six months and refined products by the end of the year, giving member states time to secure alternative supply routes and reduce the impact on global markets.
According to her, the ban will increase pressure on Russia while minimizing harm to member nations and their allies around the world.
"Our own economy must remain robust in order to support Ukraine," she remarked. As part of its fifth sanctions package against the Kremlin, the 27-member bloc pledged in March to limit reliance on Russian energy. Russian coal was prohibited early last month. In her statements to parliament on Wednesday, EU President Jean-Claude Juncker said that the oil embargo would be difficult to implement because certain EU member states rely heavily on Russian energy.
According to a report released by the EU last month, Russia supplied 27% of its oil imports, 40% of its total gas consumption, and 46% of its coal, accounting for 62 percent of the EU's overall imports from the country, totaling $104 billion.
"Let's be clear: It won't be simple because some member nations rely heavily on Russian oil," she continued, "but we simply must do it."
Along with the oil embargo, the sanctions package includes punitive measures against high-ranking military leaders, as well as those responsible for the siege of Mariupol and those who have perpetrated war crimes in Bucha, a city that has come to symbolize Russia's war savagery.
Following the withdrawal of Russian troops from Bucha early last month, hundreds of citizens' remains were discovered bloodied and strewn throughout the city's streets.
Ukrainian prosecutors have charged Russian soldiers with war crimes in the city near Kyiv, while the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights said it witnessed unlawful killings, including the summary executions of 50 civilians, during a one-day visit to the city.
"Sending another vital signal to the perpetrators of the Kremlin's war: We know who you are, and you will be held accountable," said Von der Leyen, referring to individuals who perpetrated war crimes in Bucha and the siege of Mariupol.
On Monday, a mass burial was discovered near a church in Bucha, a hamlet northwest of Kyiv, Ukraine. 4 April 2022 is the date. Following the discovery of mass graves and the probable execution of civilians near Kyiv, Ukraine and Western nations accused Russian troops of war crimes. 57 individuals were discovered in a hurriedly constructed ditch behind a church, according to a rescue officer. Sberbak, Russia's largest bank, will be removed from the SWIFT international payment system, which connects banks all over the world, as part of the deal.
"By doing so, we target banks that are systemically important to Russia's financial system and Putin's ability to wage destruction," she explained. "This will cement Russia's banking sector's full isolation from the rest of the world."
She also urged that three Russian state-owned broadcasters be barred from EU airspace, as well as from cable, satellite, the Internet, and cellphones.
The EU has recognized the channels as mouthpieces for Putin's agenda, she said, adding that they will cut off the Kremlin from European accountants, consultants, and "spin-doctors."
The EU would deny Russia's economy the chance to diversify and develop as a result of these combined sanctions, she claims.
"Putin wanted Ukraine to vanish from the face of the earth. Obviously, he will fail "she expressed herself. "On the contrary, Ukraine has come together, and Putin is collapsing in his own country, Russia."
On February 24, Russia invaded Ukraine under the guise of demilitarization and denazification.
According to United Nations estimates, approximately 3,200 Ukrainian citizens have been killed since then, with roughly 5.6 million forced to evacuate the nation.
Along with the EU, democratic countries such as the United Kingdom, Canada, and the United States have frequently imposed severe measures on Russia, including sanctions, which have already taken a toll on the Russian economy.
Australia imposed penalties on 110 Russians on Wednesday, totaling more than 800 persons, in response to their country's war.
Before being enacted, member states will discuss and vote on the sanctions package proposed by von der Leyen on Wednesday.
According to the European Council, the EU has sanctioned 1,093 people and 80 entities for their roles in Russia's aggression against Ukraine, which dates back to March 2014, when Moscow took Crimea.
