In the crucial US midterm elections, issues including inflation, abortion, and the future of democracy are front of mind for Americans.Voting took place on Tuesday in a crucial election that will determine if Republicans regain control of the House of Representatives and the Senate and break the Democratic Party's grasp on Washington.
The vote is the first significant national election since the Capitol building was attacked on January 6, 2021, and the US Supreme Court's ruling ending constitutional protection for abortion rights in June of last year.
Along with governorships, state and local jobs, one-third of the closely divided Senate and all 435 of the narrowly controlled House seats are up for election. As voters lined up outside of libraries, gyms, laundromats, and fire stations to start casting ballots, emotions were raw. They waited to cast their ballots while holding babies in their arms and wearing uniforms, suits, and gym gear from Lewiston, Maine, to rainy Pacoima, California.
Many people claimed they were concerned about the future of democracy, inflation, abortion, and criminality.
