BERLIN (AP) — Germany is taking control of three Russian-owned refineries in the country to ensure energy security before an embargo on oil from Russia takes effect next year, officials said Friday.Rosneft Deutschland GmbH and RN Refining & Marketing GmbH will be managed by the Federal Network Agency of Germany, according to a statement from the Economy Ministry. The outcome is that the agency will also have jurisdiction over the firms' stakes in three refineries: PCK Schwedt, MiRo, and Bayernoil, which are situated in the east and south of the nation.
According to the government, Rosneft imports oil from Russia worth several hundred million euros (dollars) each month, making up around 12% of Germany's capacity for oil refining. It stated that the change will aid in maintaining energy supply and that it would initially last for six months.
Despite a prospective EU embargo that is set to take effect on January 1, 2023, Rosneft previously stated that it had no intention of stopping the import of Russian oil through the Druzhba pipeline.
The PCK refinery in Schwedt, which employs approximately 1,200 people and supplies petroleum products to much of northeastern Germany, including Berlin, according to the government, will also have a long-term strategy unveiled.
