For the first time since Will Smith slapped him at the Academy Awards, Chris Rock returned to the stage on Wednesday night.
The incident drew Rock's first public comments. The audience at Boston's Wilbur Theater greeted him with two back-to-back standing ovations that lasted several minutes during his first of two performances.
"Let me be all misty and s***," Rock continued, his eyes welling up with tears as he gestured to the enthusiastic applause of the crowd.
He joked, "How was your weekend?" and the audience laughed."I don't have a whole lot to say about what happened, so if you came to hear about it, I had a complete show written before this weekend. And since I'm still processing what happened, I'll address it at some time. And it'll be serious and humorous, but for now, I'll tell some jokes."
The comedian continued his show, which is part of his "Ego Death Tour."Marsha Paul, who was in the crowd, told CNN that she could tell Rock was impacted by the response from the audience.
She remarked, "When he came on stage, the crowd simply went bananas." "They were overjoyed to see him and expressed their support."
According to another concertgoer, Rock put on an excellent show, quickly moving past the Oscars in his set.
"He didn't appear interested in discussing it, which didn't concern us because he was so amusing that he didn't need to."
Rock took the stage again around an hour later for a second performance. A standing ovation welcomed him once more.
"Before all of this foolishness," Rock remarked, "I wrote a show."
He stated that he intends to discuss the Oscars incident in greater detail at a later date.
"I haven't talked to anyone, despite what you heard," Rock remarked, presumably in response to whether he'd spoken with Smith since the weekend's events. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has launched 'disciplinary proceedings' against Smith for his antics at the Oscars on Sunday.
After making a joke about Smith's wife's shaved head, the actor walked up to the platform of the awards presentation and smacked Rock, who was presenting at the time.
In an Instagram statement on Monday, Smith apologized for his behavior, calling it "inappropriate and inexcusable."
"Chris, I'd like to express my regret in public. I was wrong and out of line. I'm humiliated, and my behavior did not reflect the guy I aspire to be. In a world filled with love and generosity, violence has no place "Smith penned his thoughts.
Smith was asked to leave the event after the altercation, the Academy stated in a statement released Wednesday "and turned down the offer
"We could have handled the situation differently," the Academy acknowledged."
