Young people are being urged to vote by Elizabeth Warren.
The Adolescent Voting Rights Act, a comprehensive piece of legislation to support the implementation of the 26th Amendment and increase youth access to voting, was introduced before Congress on Monday by the senator from Massachusetts and the representative from Georgia, Nikema Williams. All individuals who are 18 years old or older are guaranteed the right to vote by the 26th Amendment, which was ratified on July 1, 1971.
According to a draft of the new bill obtained by The Daily Beast, Warren is recommending "expanding voter registration at public colleges and universities, ensuring all states allow 16- and 17-year-olds to pre-register to vote, requiring colleges and universities to have polling places on campus and ensuring that all states include student IDs as a form of voter ID" due to a historically low turnout of young people going to the polls.
Additionally, it would eliminate time-based residency requirements for all federal elections, establish a grant program for young election participation, and compile information on youth voter registration and election participation. The legislation's announcement included a quote from Warren that stated, "Voting is the throbbing heart of our democracy." Young people are the future of America, so we must do everything in our power to protect their ability to exercise their right to vote given that it is being attacked across the nation.
She stated, "I'm happy to join with her and my colleagues on this initiative and I'm proud to introduce my new bicameral bill with Congresswoman Williams to guarantee young people aren't left out of the voting process. There are already six additional Senate Democrats who are cosponsoring Warren's measure, but no Republicans. The American Civil Liberties Union, Common Cause, NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Campaign Legal Center, Demos, League of Women Voters of the United States, Let America Vote Action Fund, MoveOn, NextGen America, The Andrew Goodman Foundation, ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge, When We All Vote, the Fair Elections Center's Campus Vote Project, Students Learn St.
