Governor Greg Abbott of Texas gave an update on the state's response to Tuesday's elementary school massacre in Uvalde, Texas, which killed 19 children and two adults and injured others during a press conference on Wednesday.

During the briefing, Texas governor contender Beto O'Rourke stormed the stage, accusing Abbott of "doing nothing."Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick scolded O'Rourke, "You are out of line, and an embarrassment."

"Sir, you are out of line!" said another member of Abbot's entourage to O'Rourke as he proceeded to approach Abbot.Another person is overheard ordering O'Rourke, "Sit down and don't play this stunt."

The massacre in Uvalde, Texas, a small town about an hour from the Mexican border, is the latest in a string of tragic shootings in the United States, where widespread outrage over gun violence has failed to prompt action to prevent further deaths.
At a press conference on Tuesday, Abbott said the gunman "shot and killed 14 pupils in a brutal and incomprehensible manner" as well as a teacher.

"It is likely that responding officers killed him," the governor said of the suspect, a local youngster.

It was the bloodiest school shooting since 14 high school students and three adult staff members were slain in Parkland, Florida in 2018 — and the worst at an elementary school since the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy in Connecticut, which killed 20 children and six adults.

Despite the fact that mass shootings occur on a regular basis, successive attempts to modify gun laws in the US Congress have failed, enabling states and local governments to impose their own restrictions.

According to the latest data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the United States experienced 19,350 firearm homicides in 2020, up nearly 35% from 2019.
