After new redistricting for the state was published on Thursday night, Chris Hayes of SNBC's All In With Chris Hayes went after Democrat campaign chair Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney, D-N.Y., for his tentative plan to run against freshman Rep. Mondaire Jones, D-N.Y.Maloney, the DCCC's chairman, was confronted with the decision of running against a Republican in district 18 or primarying Jones in district 17, a more consistently blue district, almost immediately after the new district plan was announced.Maloney has said he's thinking about running against Mondaire, which has enraged Democrats and, in this case, MSNBC host Chris Hayes, who chastised the opportunistic legislator without holding back.
DCCC CHAIR GETS BACKLAW FOR POSSIBLY PRIMARYING FRESHMAN PROGRESSIVE DEMS
"And in the aftermath of this new map, we've seen activity from one member of Congress that I have to say, is among the most heinous political malpractice I've ever seen," Hayes said.
In a frustrated tone, he said, "Sean Patrick Maloney says on Twitter less than half an hour after the new map is revealed that if the maps are completed, he will forsake his present district and run in the newly redesigned 17th district instead. However, there is already a Democratic congressman representing the 17th district."
"His name is Mondaire Jones, and he's a young black man – a freshman – who's up against the head of the DCCC, whose job it is to keep the Democratic majority by winning tough elections," Hayes added.
Mondaire's district, according to Hayes, is "easier for Democrats to control" than Maloney's.
"Sean Patrick Maloney is abandoning the somewhat more difficult area rather than putting his money where his mouth is and running in it. Despite his claims that he is just changing districts to be closer to his house, "Hayes expressed his displeasure with the situation. The host then launched into a scathing attack on Maloney's decision to transfer districts. "Okay, but you could have announced that, A; B, you don't have to flee the district after 25 minutes. And, C, your choice still jeopardizes the candidacy of a freshman Democrat. As if you're going to vote for a new Democrat in the primary. Who will run for the 17th Congressional District?"
"Now, as I've indicated before, my brother works for the representative from the 16th district of New York, Jamal Bowman, who is also implicated in all this mess," the anchor continued.
"Because in the face of a primary from Maloney, Mondaire Jones may relocate to the 16th district and primary the incumbent there, Jamal Bowman," he added, adding that he has "worked very hard to stay free of this controversy" because his brother works for Bowman.
Hayes stated he had no choice but to speak up. "However, this is such a heinous act that I can't believe it."
