(AP) NEW YORK — Chris Christie, a former governor of New Jersey, is anticipated to begin his second run for the Republican presidential nomination in New Hampshire the following week.

A person familiar with Christie's thinking who spoke on the condition of anonymity to confirm Christie's plans said that Christie plans to make the announcement at a town hall Tuesday night at Saint Anselm College's New Hampshire Institute of Politics.

The timing, which was first made public by Axios, comes as a number of seasoned Christie advisers established a super political action committee to back his anticipated run.

In a recent story, the Associated Press stated that Christie was anticipated to enter the contest "imminently."

As the only contender willing to openly challenge former President Donald Trump, who is currently the front-runner for the nomination, Christie has positioned himself as the only viable option. Former federal prosecutor Christie served as Trump's friend and adviser for a long time, but they parted ways when Trump refused to accept the results of the 2020 election. Since then, Christie has emerged as a prominent and outspoken detractor of the former president.

Christie, who is presently polling last, ran for the Republican nomination in 2016. After placing sixth in the New Hampshire primary, Christie withdrew from the contest the next day.
