By a slim margin, voters would reject Scottish independence: Poll

According to a recent poll, Scottish voters are still split on independence, with those opposed to leaving the UK holding "the smallest of leads" over those in favor.

According to a poll done by Savanta ComRes for The Scotsman newspaper, if a referendum were held tomorrow, 44% of Scots would vote "yes," 46% would vote "no," and 10% were still uncertain."Removing those results in a headline vote intention of 51% against and 49% in favor."

The poll was conducted two days after Nicola Sturgeon, the First Minister of Scotland, announced that the devolved government would hold an independence referendum on October 19, 2023.

Speaking to the Scottish Parliament on Tuesday in Edinburgh, Sturgeon acknowledged that Scotland might not have the authority to call the referendum without London's consent.

Before posing the question to voters, it will seek the UK Supreme Court's opinion to establish legal clarity: "Should Scotland be an independent country?"The question's wording was identical to that used in 2014, when Scots voted by a margin of 55 percent to 45 percent to remain in the United Kingdom.

According to Sturgeon's Scottish National Party, the argument has changed as a result of the UK's departure from the European Union, which was decided upon in a 2016 referendum. The majority of Scottish citizens reject Brexit.

Sturgeon emphasized that the "consultative referendum" would only move forward with the UK Supreme Court's blessing

The Supreme Court announced that it would review the fresh legal argument and set a hearing date "in due time."The most recent poll, according to Chris Hopkins, political research director at Savanta ComRes, "just helps to underscore the rift inside Scotland."

The lines of conflict that were established in 2014 are all-too-familiar, he added, and Nicola Sturgeon's determination to hold a referendum at almost any cost only widens them.Only a fool would wager on her regaining independence if she can overcome the obstacle of being legally permitted to hold a second vote, whatever of the discord it would sow.
