Police said that they had found the body of a co-pilot who had left an aircraft mid-flight during an emergency landing close to Raleigh, North Carolina. At a news conference on Friday night, Darshan Patel, a spokesperson for Wake County emergency management, revealed that the co-pilot, 23-year-old Charles Hew Crooks, was not wearing a parachute. Authorities think Crooks either leapt out of the plane or fell out.

A twin-engine CASA CN-212 Aviocar carrying Crooks and a pilot took off on Friday. Around 2:40 p.m., the aircraft made a grassy landing at Raleigh-Durham International Airport, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. The plane appears to slip off the runway and spin in a partial circle before coming to a rest in a video obtained by NBC affiliate WRAL of Raleigh.

According to the TV channel, the pilot, who has not been named, requested to make an emergency landing at the airport after informing air traffic control that the landing gear was malfunctioning. According to WRAL, the pilot had minor wounds and had been discharged from the hospital.

Several organizations helped with the search for Crooks. Just before 7 o'clock in the evening, an officer was waved down in a Fuquay-Varina area when a resident reported hearing noises behind their house.

The event is being looked into by the National Transportation Safety Board and FAA.
