According to numerous eyewitnesses and posts on social media, novelist Salman Rushdie was attacked onstage at Chautauqua, New York, close to Erie, on Friday.

The assault took place at around 10:45 a.m., not long after Mr. Rushdie mounted the stage to deliver a lecture at the Chautauqua Institution, a summer arts and literature program destination in western New York. When the attacker barged onto the stage and assaulted Mr. Rushdie, he had just entered the theater and was seated in a chair as a staff member introduced him. It was unclear right away if Mr. Rushdie was hurt. After Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini of Iran called for his assassination in 1989 because his book "The Satanic Verses" was deemed disrespectful to Islam, Mr. Rushdie spent approximately ten years living in hiding under police protection. He was prohibited from entering India, the nation of his birth, for more than ten years because the book was outlawed there.Elisabeth Healey, 75, a spectator, claimed that there was only one assailant. "He wore all-black clothing. He was wearing a baggy black shirt. He approached him quickly as he ran over to him.
