As his trial begins, Mario Batali’s victim describes the alleged assault.

The accuser of Mario Batali was not seen on camera. The woman who has accused Batali, previously regarded one of the most influential personalities in the food world, of indecent assault and abuse, was ordered by the court in the celebrity chef's trial, which opened in Boston on Monday, that her face could not be shown on CourtTV's live testimony.Instead, the cameras were primarily focused on Batali, who became the first chef to face criminal charges as part of the #MeToo movement, which has targeted several men in the hospitality industry over the past five years, including John Besh in New Orleans, Charlie Hallowell in Oakland, Calif., and Mike Isabella in Washington, D.C. Batali sat mostly impassively as he heard to the 32-year-old woman recount the alleged assault on April 1, 2017, in a Boston restaurant.

Workers said Mario Batali became abusive when the drink flowed.

Batali, 61, has denied the claims. Judge James Stanton spent much of the day listening to the woman's evidence under direct questioning and cross-examination after he forfeited his right to a jury trial on Monday. If convicted, Batali faces a sentence of 212 years in prison and must register as a sex offender.

According to the accuser's evidence, she was eating with a companion at Towne Stove and Spirits in Boston's Back Bay district when Batali saw her taking a sneaky selfie of him. Batali beckoned for her to take a seat at his bar. She was ready to apologize and even remove the photo she took without his consent, she testified. She claims, however, that Batali pushed her to take selfies with him. She stated she took photos and brief videos with Batali for the following three minutes while standing next to him.

Assistant District Attorney Nina Bonelli of Suffolk County asked the woman to describe what was happening in the images and short "live photo" recordings, as well as what was happening outside the frame. Batali was to her left while the woman shot photos with her right hand while holding the phone.

"His right hand is all over my breasts, all over my rear end, in between my legs, grasping me in a way I've never been touched like that before — like squeezing in between my knees, squeezing my vagina to pull me closer to him, as if that's a regular way to grab someone," she testified. She also said that an obviously drunk Batali placed his tongue in her ear at one point.

"I was astonished, horrified, and alarmed," she said.

She testified that she was seeking for a way out of the situation after a few minutes, but Batali recommended she meet him in his room at the Mandarin Oriental, a hotel near Eataly, an Italian marketplace where Batali is a partner. "Child chills came over my body when he requested me to join him in the hotel room," she added. She stated that she declined the invitation and departed the restaurant shortly afterwards.

She said that she didn't inform her close friend about the encounter until a week or so later because she didn't want to ruin her buddy's vacation. When her buddy returned, she told her about the alleged attack. They resolved to "never eat at Eataly again" because of Batali's alleged actions, she said.

Batali's attorney, Anthony Fuller, used cross-examination to rip apart the woman's evidence. He revealed bank statements that showed she dined at Eataly four weeks after the purported Batali incident. Fuller also mentioned that she had returned to Towne, implying that such a decision was illogical given the alleged traumatic assault.

She said, "Towne wasn't the scary place." "The dangerous individual was the trigger."

Fuller also interrogated the woman about a discrepancy in the images and videos she took with Batali. Why did they not reveal any of the alleged acts, and why did she appear to be smiling in pictures, the attorney wondered?

"The hands that are grabbing me are not in the video," she added, adding that she laughs and smiles when she is in an unpleasant circumstance. She testified, "It seems like I'm smiling because I'm a pretty smile-y, laugh-y person." "I try to calm things down. That's how I responded."

Fuller also questioned the woman's sincerity. He mentioned that she had launched a separate civil claim against Batali for damages related to the purported occurrence. Fuller said that during the jury selection for a criminal trial in 2018, she claimed on a form that she was "clairvoyant." The woman made no denials. She claimed to be able to foretell big events "to some extent."

In his opening remarks, Fuller stated, "The defense in this case is really simple: This didn't happen." "There was no sexual assault…" You'll see she's not telling the truth at the end."

After media publications including Eater, the New York Times, and The Washington Post began reporting on the chef's alleged sexual misconduct, Batali virtually vanished from public view. Batali apologized in an email newsletter a week after the claims were first revealed, claiming he accepted "full responsibility" and giving a recipe for cinnamon rolls.

Batali was accused of raping a lady at the Spotted Pig in Manhattan, where he was an investor. Three investigations against Batali's alleged sexual misconduct were closed in 2019 by the New York City Police Department, either because there was insufficient evidence or because the occurrences happened beyond the statute of limitations.

Batali ended his long-standing association with members of the Bastianich family in 2019, after operating dozens of restaurants and other food outlets with them in cities ranging from New York to Hong Kong. Batali also sold his Eataly interests. Following an inquiry by the New York attorney general's office, Batali, his former business partner Joseph Bastianich, and his company agreed to pay $600,000 to more than 20 former employees.

Batali's previous sexual allegations are one of the reasons, according to his accuser, why she went public with her own allegations. "I thought, 'Wow, this is true," she said after reading an Eater investigation. This isn't a one-night stand. This is unchangeable.'
