In the White House press briefing room today, Matthew McConaughey, whose hometown of Uvalde was the site of a tragic mass shooting on May 24 that killed 19 children and two adults, gave a message about guns. One of the victims was only identified by her bright green shoes with a heart written on one of the toes, among other heartbreaking details. As he walked out of the room, the actor was confronted with this yelled question from a White House correspondent for having the temerity to suggest that those in authority do something to prevent additional children from being mowed down at their schools."Are you trying to make a big deal out of it?"
Someone dressed up like Tom Hanks in Big, listened to cries for fundamental decency so that more children aren't killed, carefully wandered past any terrain deemed "overtly political," waited until McConaughey couldn't respond, and then said that.
Who? Who was responsible for the crime? It is self-evident why. Who, though, is it? Was it one of the reporters?
And, to be honest, McConaughey might have been a little too self-assured. Those youngsters are also no longer alive. The victims of the next mass massacre, which will occur while we stand by and do nothing, will be just as helpless. On a very fundamental level, I think I'm left to question why someone chooses to make a life in this manner. How can people switch off their emotions and empathy in order to capitalize on the opportunity to establish their own brand?
I'm hoping it pays off.
