He is surrounded by people he can trust. Will Smith is facing backlash after slapping Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars, but the two have been friends for years.
Denzel Washington rushed to Smith's aid when the Ali star slapped Rock for making a remark about Jada Pinkett Smith's hair loss at the Oscars on March 27. (Alopecia is her condition.) Smith stormed the stage, slapping the star of Everybody Hates Chris. After resuming his seat, the actor screamed, "Keep my wife's name out of your f—king mouth!"
After the incident, Washington was one of the first people to contact Smith, and the scandal-plagued actor even mentioned the legendary actor during his Best Actor acceptance speech later that night.
"I know you have to be able to take abuse and have people talk crazy about you to do what we do," Smith said while accepting the Oscar for his role in King Richard. "You have to be able to put up with people disrespecting you in this business and smile and act as though it's OK.""Denzel told me a few minutes earlier, 'At your highest moment, be careful,'" he concluded. The devil will come after you at that point.' "I'd like to be a vessel for love," she says.
On April 2, during a discussion at the T.D. Jakes Leadership Summit, Washington addressed the topic. "It's supposed that if the devil ignores you, you're doing something wrong," the Macbeth actor explained. "Oh no, let him alone; he's my favorite," the devil says. When the devil attacks you, it's possible that he's attempting to do the right thing. And the devil had a hold on him that night for whatever reason."
Washington went on to say that he couldn't turn his back on what had happened. He explained, "There is no way I could have sat in my seat." "I'm not that kind of person…." Fortunately, there were others there who came over right away with me, not just me, but others like Tyler Perry."
Perry and Smith go back a long way. In 2008, the Men in Black star took him on his international press tour for Seven Pounds to demonstrate him how to sell a film internationally. A soundstage at Tyler Perry Studios, which spans 330 acres in Atlanta, was named after Smith when the Madea creator established the complex a decade later.
